The script I choose to read was Boogie Nights. After giving this a read and feeling the
atmosphere of this, I quickly drove and looked at it as a set designer. Set designing in this seems and sounds 70s or
80-ish, so I can see this very fun and rich in creativity.
As a set designer I would first
read the full script. After reading full
script I would note all the scenes. The
very first thing that grab my attention about this film script was the opening
scene at the club that slowly begins to make its way into the club. Because it is the opening scene, the club has
to be perfect but also fitting to a sleazy 70s atmosphere, I would like neon
lights on the outside of the building, preferably matching the with name of the
film. The building would of course also
have to be big enough to create an easy moving shot. The club would need tables, bar, food, and
dance floor, because a lot of clubs nowadays don’t offer food service.
Designing character’s bed rooms would
be base upon the character’s personalities.
Character’s bed rooms are the best moment to define the character, its
almost a personal look into them. The
bed room has to relate to the character’s status, are they wealthy or
poor. Photos, trophies, and awards
provide an opportunity to understand the character’s past and characteristics. Posters, toys, bottles, and other misc. are
more characteristics but most importantly prove the character’s interest.
Because
this revolves around the rise of the porno industry, creating those scenes does
would take this cliché look. The porno
scenery has to look armature but pleasing.
Color and exotic designs were the hottest and trending style during this
century, so of course it would have to be incorporated into the pornos scenes. This would give the porno scenes a bit of of
a more luxuries look.
The set designing
for this set seems pretty easy. Today a
lot of it would have to be recreated in a studio. It could be done in todays home but just
would have to be redesigned to fit the 70s, so wall paper would have to be a
must, along with carpeting, and some bad paintings. Over the project would be fun to explore the
rich colors and exotic designs the 70s had to offer.
